5 Indian inspired ideas for your Thanksgiving Holiday

My Thanksgiving memories are filled with gatherings of the Indian families I grew up with. Every year, my parents and their friends would put together a holiday feast that consisted of the good o’l American turkey, stuffing and mashed potatoes lining one side of the table and lavish Indian fare on the other side. Nowadays, Thanksgiving just doesn’t feel complete without adding a little Indian flavor to the holiday. Below are a few easy and inspired touches to add a little Indian flavor to your holiday celebration!

Giving Thanks

This year, write mail a thoughtful note or letter to near and dear ones letting them know why you are thankful for them. You can even provide Thank you cards for your guests to write in or send each of them home with a thankful note from you. Teryyo’s beautiful Hindi greeting cards are perfect for this occasion, giving it a touch of Indian inspiration with modern style. Through 12/31/11, Teryyo is offering a 10% discount for our generation ginger users on all of her cards, just enter the code “generationginger”.

Pumpkin Pie with a twist

Pumpkin Pie is an old favorite, but sometimes its fun to give the old fave a delicious twist. This year, make a Pumpkin Pie Kulfi (Indian ice cream) and deliver the traditional goodness of the classic pie in a creamy, cool and refreshing way.

Peace of mind and piece of turkey

Before diving into a table of food and a room full of relatives, melt away some stress and calories of the holiday with this fantastic yoga workout designed especially for you by Yoga instructor and KC Wellness Guide owner, Rebecca Fischer. You can even make a pre or post Thanksgiving party out of it- invite a few friends the day before, after or even round up a couple of relatives early morning of turkey day and have a Peace of mind- Piece of turkey 30 minute yoga workout.

Leftover Goodness

Switch up your Thanksgiving leftover sandwich by stuffing that stuffing, cranberry sauce and turkey into a piece of garlic naan instead of bread. If you are not a cranberry sauce fan, or want a little spice, use a mango chutney to bring your naan wrap to life!

Give someone else something to be thankful for

Local organizations like Harvesters are great places to offer your help- monetarily or as a volunteer. We found a cool organization called the Thaakat Foundation that specifically helps South Asian causes and communities both on local and global levels. Thaakat (meaning: Something or someone that gives one strength or is a source of power or encouragement) was founded by Uzma Bawany-Ali, and focuses on mobilizing the new generation of South Asian Americans to give through charitable donations and humanitarian work. Visit their website to find out                                                             about their current projects and how you can help!
