The Product: Diwali inspired Bibs and Flashcards, by Gnaana

This year my sister-in-law and I decided that instead of planning a visit during Thanksgiving or Christmas, we would instead get together every year for Diwali. So, in a short time, my house will be filled with guests- including my adorable two-year old niece and 10 month old nephew.

super cute packaging

Naturally, as a bua (that is the Hindi word for the aunt that is your dad’s sister), I feel inclined to shower the little ones with all kinds of gifts. One of my favorite sites to find cool and contemporary South Asian toys and books is gnaana.com. Gnaana’s mission is to pass on the traditions and teachings of South Asian culture to the new generation by designing and creating products for children that are inspired by Montessori education methods. The results are educational toys that weave the wisdom and knowledge of our ancestors with modern aesthetic and inspiration.

Boy Diwali Bib Set- 100% organic cotton

In the past, my sis-in-law gave my little Lela Gnaana’s Chota Chef recipe cards- which she loves for the bright illustrations and delicious recipes and I love because it is a wonderful way to introduce her to the flavors of India. I’m also a fan of the Bindi Baby book- with sweet pictures and large letters that Lela likes to trace as she sounds them out.  As I perused through the products, I found the perfect something for my little nephew- a Diwali bib and flash card set.

When the order arrived, I was quite pleased with the packaging. The items came in a canvas bad with a cute note and the flashcards were in a little box sweetly decorated with raffia. The bibs come in packages for two, with designs for girls (rangoli and a diya) and boys (fireworks and a geometric diya). They are made from organic cotton that is incredibly soft and the stitching of the edges as well as the design embroidery are immaculate- not a single loose thread or seam. I cannot wait to see them around the neck of little Ved.My daughter was curious about the flashcards, hovering around me to see what was inside decorated box.The flashcards come on a set of 8 and display images and words related to Diwali, such as Patakhe, Kalash and Diya.

Diwali Flashcards

Each word is written in Hindi with the English transliteration just underneath it. While I ordered the Hindi cards, the sets are also available in the following languages: Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, and Bengali.Gnaana also has a separate Sikh Set (in either English or Punjabi). Gnaana includes this variety with many of their products, giving so many homes the resources to be able to pass on our beautiful South Asian heritage to future generations.

This weekend, Lela and I are going to wrap this special gift and pick a recipe from our Chota Chef recipe cards to make for our guests- a gnaana inspired holiday!

Our winner for the Gnaana give-away is Generation Ginger memeber, Sulo Rupani. Congratulations Sulo!
